New norm idea:

Default NO ask. What is it? It’s an ask where the default answer is “no,” so the recipient isn’t expected to answer or feel any pressure to engage. But they can if they want to, or whenever they feel ready.

For example:

– “Robert, can I stay at your place when I’m visiting the city? [default-no]” – “Thanks for the question.”

In this case, Robert might feel “I don’t know” or be leaning “no,” but he doesn’t need to process it or respond. He’d only reply if he felt “yes.” The upside? Robert doesn’t have to engage or feel bad for not responding. And if he wants to decline by not answering, it (hopefully) feels less personal or awkward.
